Hearing Loss Management

What is hearing loss management?

Hearing loss management involves comprehensive strategies to address the unique needs of individuals with hearing impairment. It encompasses various services, such as diagnostic assessments, counseling, and interventions tailored to enhance communication and overall well-being. Audiologists and healthcare professionals are crucial in guiding individuals and their families through available options, including hearing aids, cochlear implants, or assistive listening devices.

Singapore's healthcare system ensures accessibility to hearing loss management services, promoting early detection and timely interventions. Public awareness initiatives contribute to reducing the stigma associated with hearing impairment, encouraging individuals to seek help proactively. Collaborative efforts between healthcare providers and support networks foster an inclusive environment, empowering those with hearing loss to navigate daily life confidently. Regular follow-ups and adjustments to intervention plans contribute to ongoing success in managing hearing loss and improving the overall quality of life for affected individuals.

How does hearing loss management work?

Effective hearing loss management depends on your hearing loss and the affected part of your hearing pathway.

Types of hearing loss include:

  • Auditory processing disorder:auditory process disorder occurs when your brain encounters difficulty processing sound, making it challenging to grasp speech or discern the origin of sounds.
  • Conductive hearing loss:conductive hearing loss occurs when an issue in your outer or middle ear hinders sound transmission to the inner ear.
  • Sensorineural hearing loss:sensorineural hearing loss arises when issues in the cochlea or auditory nerve affect hearing. Sensorineural hearing loss is often permanent.
  • Mixed hearing loss:mixed hearing loss combines conductive and sensorineural hearing loss.

Benefits of hearing loss management

  • Supports cognitive function and may reduce the risk of cognitive decline.

What results can I expect from hearing loss management?

Different types of hearing tests may be conducted to identify an individual's hearing loss. Depending on the type of hearing loss, your audiologist will approach your case with a treatment option that best suits your needs for effective management.

Some common examples of hearing loss management include:

  • Removal of blockage: some hearing loss can be caused by blockages such as earwax build-up or other objects in the ear canal. Removing these blockages may help alleviate hearing loss.
  • Medications: hearing loss can also be caused by ear infections of the inner or middle ear. Medications such as antibiotics may be prescribed to clear up the infection.
  • Hearing aids: hearing aids (link to service page) are small electronic devices placed either in or behind the ear. It amplifies sound, enabling the individual to hear better.
  • Cochlear implant: a cochlear implant comprises two parts – one part behind the ear and another part that is surgically implanted under the skin. It works by stimulating the auditory nerve.

How many sessions of hearing loss management are needed?

The number of hearing loss management sessions required varies based on your situation. Temporary hearing loss may resolve without a specific number of sessions. Conductive hearing loss can be resolved in the long term following treatment. However, sensorineural and age-related hearing loss is often permanent.

Hearing aids or cochlear implants can be effective solutions, potentially restoring most of your hearing. The specific treatment plan and number of sessions needed depend on the severity, cause, and type of hearing loss. Your audiologist will help determine the appropriate action, ensuring tailored and effective management based on your unique circumstances.

Frequently asked questions

Someone with hearing loss can still engage in conversations, benefiting from hearing aids or other treatments to enhance their auditory ability. In contrast, a person who's deaf may hear very little or nothing at all. Traditional hearing devices are ineffective for deaf people, leading them to rely on sign language for communication.

Hearing loss may be deemed a disability within specific thresholds, which vary slightly in different countries. Generally, it qualifies as a disability if it impacts your daily life in educational, social, or professional aspects.

Hearing loss may not always resolve on its own. Some cases, like temporary issues due to infections, may improve. However, permanent conditions often require intervention, such as hearing aids.
