A cochlear implant is a small and complex electronic device that improves hearing for people with severe hearing loss and those who cannot hear well with hearing aids. It comprises two key parts – the sound processor, which is attached externally and the implant, which needs to be surgically implanted.

A cochlear implant surgery is performed to fit the implant into the cochlear. Once the implant picks up the signals, it stimulates the nerve fibres in the inner ear. The nerve signals then travel to the brain and are converted into sounds.

You should preferably remove the outer speech processor before going to bed. However there are some children or adults who prefer to wearing it to sleep. If you leave it on, device will most likely come off during your sleep.
A cochlear implant is not similar to hearing aids. While hearing aids amplify the sounds to help damaged ears detect the sound waves better, a cochlear implant bypasses the damaged parts of the ear and directly stimulates the auditory nerve.
Yes, cochlear Implantees can participate in sports activities like swimming by encasing the speech processor in sealed water proof aqua kit which is meant for such purposes.
If you have a hearing loss you are encouraged to first trial and wear hearing aids. However if the hearing loss is significant and you are not benefiting from a powerful hearing aid you are most likely a candidate for cochlear Implant.
