Hearing TESTs

What is a hearing test?

A hearing test, also known as an audiometric or hearing evaluation, is a diagnostic procedure designed to assess a person's ability to hear sounds. The test is typically conducted by an audiologist, a healthcare professional specialising in hearing and balance disorders. The main purpose of a hearing test is to determine the extent and nature of any hearing loss a person may be experiencing.

Hearing plays a vital role in our daily lives, influencing communication, social interactions, and overall well-being. The ability to hear allows us to connect with others, experience the richness of sounds in our environment, and engage fully in various activities.

Hearing loss is becoming increasingly common, especially with the ageing population in Singapore. Recent research indicates that over 60% of adults aged 60 years or older in Singapore experience hearing loss, which is expected to rise as the population ages.

The challenges associated with hearing loss can significantly impact an individual's life. Communication barriers, social isolation, and decreased quality of life are common consequences. Moreover, hearing loss may lead to difficulties in educational and occupational settings, hindering personal and professional growth. Furthermore, it can affect mental health by contributing to feelings of frustration, anxiety, and depression.

Early detection and intervention through regular hearing tests are crucial for addressing these challenges, as they can enable individuals to access appropriate solutions such as hearing aids or cochlear implants.

How does a hearing test work?

During a hearing test, various methods and equipment may be used to measure different aspects of hearing, such as:

  • Pure-tone audiometry: this involves using headphones or earphones through which tones of different frequencies and volumes are presented to the individual. The person responds when they hear a sound by pressing a button or raising their hand.
  • Tympanometry: by using tympanometry, an audiologist assesses the movement of the eardrum in response to changes in air pressure. It helps determine the status of the middle ear and the mobility of the eardrum.
  • Speech audiometry: speech audiometry test assesses a person's ability to hear and understand speech. The individual may be asked to repeat words or sentences presented at different volumes.
  • Otoacoustic emissions (OAE): OAE measures sounds generated by the inner ear in response to a stimulus. It is often used to assess the function of the inner ear, specifically the hair cells.
  • Auditory brainstem response (ABR): ABR helps measure the auditory nerve's and brainstem's electrical activity in response to sound. It is often used to assess the function of the auditory pathway.

Hearing tests are important for identifying hearing loss and determining its type and severity. They can also help the audiologist decide the appropriate course of action, such as hearing aids, cochlear implants, or other interventions to improve or manage hearing.

What are the benefits of a hearing test?

A hearing test is important for several reasons; some of the benefits of a hearing test include:

  • Helps with early detection:a hearing test can help identify hearing problems, allowing for early intervention and management.
  • Improved communication skills:addressing hearing loss through interventions like hearing aids can enhance communication skills.
  • Enhanced quality of life:improved hearing contributes to a better quality of life by allowing individuals to engage in social activities fully.
  • Help overcome safety concerns:hearing tests can help overcome safety concerns that can arise due to impaired hearing, such as difficulty hearing alarms, sirens, or other warning signals.
  • Better cognitive health:addressing hearing loss may positively affect cognitive health, as there is a link between untreated hearing loss and an increased risk of cognitive decline.
  • Better academic and professional performance:professional management of hearing issues can help individuals perform well in academic and professional settings by improving their communication and engagement.
  • Improved emotional well-being:addressing hearing loss can positively affect emotional well-being, reducing feelings of isolation, frustration, and anxiety associated with communication difficulties.

What conditions can a hearing test diagnose?

A hearing test conducted by an audiologist can diagnose various conditions related to hearing and auditory function. Some of the conditions that can be identified through a hearing test include:

  • Conductive hearing loss: conductive hearing lossis caused by issues in the outer or middle ear, such as earwax blockage, ear infections, or problems with the ear bones.
  • Sensorineural hearing loss:sensorineural hearing loss is caused by damage to the inner ear or auditory nerve, often caused by ageing, exposure to loud noises, or certain medical conditions.
  • Mixed hearing loss:mixed hearing loss involves a combination of conductive and sensorineural hearing loss, which affects both the outer/middle ear and inner ear/nerve.
  • Otosclerosis: otosclerosis is an abnormal bone growthin the middle ear that can cause conductive hearing loss.
  • Meniere's disease:Meniere’s disease is a disorder caused by fluid buildup in the chambers of the inner ear, which can lead to episodes of vertigo, hearing loss, and ringing in the ears.
  • Acoustic neuroma:an acoustic neuroma is a benign tumour that forms on the vestibular nerve, the primary nerve connecting the inner ear to the brain, impacting balance and hearing.
  • Eustachian tube dysfunction: eustachian tube dysfunctionoccurs when the passages linking the middle ears to the upper throat are obstructed, which may result in ear discomfort and hearing issues.
  • Otitis media:otitis media refers to an inflammation or infection of the middle ear, which can lead to temporary hearing loss.
  • Noise-induced hearing loss: noise-induced hearing loss is caused by exposure to loud noises over time, which may result in damage to the hair cells in the inner ear.

However, while a hearing test can provide valuable information about hearing health, further medical evaluation may be needed to determine the specific cause of any identified hearing issues.

What results can I expect from a hearing test?

At D&S Audiology, our staff will assist you through the check-in process and ensure a smooth start to your visit. You will be requested to share details about your medical history, any current hearing concerns, and factors like exposure to loud noises or medications that might impact your auditory health.

This initial discussion will help our audiologist understand your specific situation and plan the treatment accordingly. Depending on your symptoms, we will conduct a thorough examination, including tests such as pure-tone audiometry, speech audiometry, and additional evaluations.

Based on the hearing assessment results, we provide hearing aids according to the needs of our patients. Our clinic specialises in providing diverse types of hearing aids, such as behind the ear, receiver in canal, and custom-designed options. We also collaborate with ENT specialists to formulate effective strategies to enhance patients' ability to cope with this condition.

The Audiometry test evaluates the intensity and tone of sounds and assesses the functionality of the outer, middle, and inner ear, as well as the brain's role in hearing. Administered by an audiologist, this painless and non-disruptive procedure typically lasts around 30 minutes and provides insights into one's hearing capabilities.

How many hearing tests are needed?

A hearing test, also known as an audiometric evaluation, is a one-time assessment conducted during a single session. The purpose of the hearing test is to evaluate the individual's hearing ability, identify any hearing loss, and determine the type and severity of the impairment. The results obtained from the test are used to understand the person's auditory health.

However, it's important to note that further consultations and sessions may be necessary for treatment and management if hearing loss is identified during the test. For example, if hearing aids are recommended, additional fitting, adjustment, and follow-up sessions may be required to ensure optimal performance and patient satisfaction.

If you are suffering from hearing issues and want to get examined by an expert audiologist, please schedule an appointment with D&S Audiology for a detailed examination and appropriate treatment recommendation.

Frequently asked questions

It is recommended to have a baseline hearing test in adulthood, with regular follow-ups every 1-3 years (every year, an annual test is recommended), especially if exposed to loud environments or experiencing any sudden drop or changes in hearing.

Depending on the cause, non-invasive treatments like hearing aids, assistive listening devices like Roger systems, or auditory training may be recommended to improve hearing and communication abilities.

Avoid inserting sharp objects into the ear canal. Excessive or hardened earwax can be managed by a healthcare professional during a routine check-up.

If you suspect hearing issues or child has delayed speech and languagemilestones consult a peadiatric Audiologist or Paediatrician for a properevaluation. Early detection and intervention are crucial for a child’s development.
